In December 2011, Greg Kroah-Hartman announced the start of Android Mainlining Project, which aims to put some Android drivers, patches and features back into the Linux kernel, starting in Linux 3.3. Project Treble separates the vendor implementation (device-specific, lower-level software written by silicon manufacturers) from the Android OS framework via a new “vendor interface”. In May 2017, with the announcement of Android 8.0, Google introduced Project Treble, a major re-architect of the Android OS framework designed to make it easier, faster, and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to newer versions of Android. As a result, Android 4.2 and 4.3 “Jelly Bean” contained relatively fewer user-facing changes, focusing more on minor changes and platform improvements. With these changes, Google can add new system functions and update apps without having to distribute an upgrade to the operating system itself.
This will detect apps that hide or change their icons and then launch from the background or abuse accessibility permissions. This new profile is intended for companion apps to medical devices, granting permissions for posting notifications, managing Bluetooth connections, and sending alerts at precise times. Tapping the “recording saved” notification opens a new screen with a simple video player that includes a seekbar, a play/pause button, and a mute button. This presumably lets you record video from the front-facing camera while capturing your screen. This new toolbar also introduces new options, including a “show selfie camera” toggle.
Android 16 QPR1 allows users to configure what happens when they tap the touchpad with three fingers. You can see a gray, circular button located after the divider separating pinned and recent apps. To address this, Google added the taskbar overflow button with the release of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. When long-pressing an app icon in the app drawer, you’ll see a “pin to taskbar” shortcut in the context menu, while you’ll see an “unpin from taskbar” shortcut when long-pressing an app icon on the taskbar. If you’d like to try the changes ahead of its stable rollout, you can already do so, starting with Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.
With Android 16 Beta 3, Google is giving app developers a chance to test if their apps are affected by this upcoming change. Local Network Protection will eventually require apps to request specific permission to access the local network. Later QPR betas give us even more features that can be chalked up to the next platform release, unless they are completely Pixel-exclusive. This gives us situations where we can try out new features coming to Android 17 (by checking them out in Android 16 QPR1 betas) before the stable Android 16 update is even launched! Android 17 will also crack down on apps that try to start audio in the background automatically when your phone boots up. Going forward, apps will need to either be visible on your screen or run a proper foreground service designed for things like music playback, navigation, or calls.
The dedicated option key, also known as menu key, and its on-screen simulation, is no longer supported since Android version 10. More recent devices typically allow the former through a long press or swipe away from the home button. Many early Android OS smartphones were equipped with a dedicated search button for quick access to a web search engine and individual apps’ internal search feature. The recent list may appear spinalto casino side-by-side or overlapping, depending on the Android version and manufacturer. An “All Apps” screen lists all installed applications, with the ability for users to drag an app from the list onto the home screen.
With Android 12, Google combined the two toggles into a singular Internet tile. Before Android 12, the OS had separate Quick Settings toggles for Wi-Fi and mobile data. Swiping down from the left side of the inner screen will open up notifications, while swiping down from the right will open Quick Settings. There may be no toggle or setting to switch back to the classic combined notification and Quick Settings panel. With Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1, we also managed to activate its Settings menu entry. With this new gesture, you can double-tap on an empty spot of the lock screen to turn off your Pixel phone’s screen.
Due to the lack of Android tablet-specific applications in 2011, early Android tablets had to make do with existing smartphone applications that were ill-suited to larger screen sizes, whereas the dominance of Apple’s iPad was reinforced by the large number of tablet-specific iOS applications. According to Gartner research company, Android-based devices outsold all contenders, every year since 2012. Research company Canalys estimated in the second quarter of 2009, that Android had a 2.8% share of worldwide smartphone shipments. Thus, forks of Android that make major changes to the operating system itself do not include any of Google’s non-free components, stay incompatible with applications that require them, and must ship with an alternative software marketplace in lieu of Google Play Store.
When enabled, adjusting the slider dynamically adjusts the brightness of specific elements in an HDR image, such as the sky or water. It’s worth noting that these screen saver features are only new to older models, as they have been available on the Pixel 10 series since launch, complementing the lineup’s Pixelsnap wireless charging accessories. This meant that if you wanted to use the Home Controls screen saver during the day but switch to the Clock at night, you had to toggle between them manually. In Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2, users noticed that swiping away apps in the Recents menu is now faster than ever.
Now, the Android OS will automatically enter your SIM card PIN when you enter your device’s lock code upon rebooting Then users can tap the use carrier default option (see the third screenshot above) to use their network’s default code. Once they’ve activated this toggle, they’ll be prompted to enter their SIM card’s current PIN. This process should work in reverse, provided Google implements a background clipboard listener on Android PCs.
Google is preparing to upgrade Android’s UWB stack with features from the FiRa 3.0 core specification. This button is slated to receive “special visual treatment,” possibly indicating a custom animation when it appears or is tapped. In Android 17 Beta 3, if you have a 2×1 Quick Settings tile, tapping the left side (on the Wi-Fi icon itself) toggles Wi-Fi on and off, while tapping the right side (outside the Wi-Fi icon, on the label) opens the pop-up. Previously, tapping the Wi-Fi Quick Settings tile would open a pop-up with options for nearby Wi-Fi networks, a toggle to enable or disable Wi-Fi, and other settings.
The video compression standard can deliver video quality similar to or better than the original at lower file sizes, provided the Android device also supports it. Vulkan allows developers to leverage the performance of modern smartphone GPUs to unlock features such as ray tracing in games and multithreading. The app UI should fill the space and respect the device posture on large-screen devices (as this change does not apply to conventional glass-slab smartphones). With Android 17, this change is now mandatory, and developers will no longer be able to opt out.
